So kam es, daß die Kammerjungfer Königin wurde: die echte Königstochter aber mußte Gänse hüten. Ihrem Lielingspferd wurde der Kopf abgeschlagen und an das Stadttor genagelt. Die Gänsemagd bekam zur Hilfe bei ihrer Arbeit ein Bübchen. So oft die beiden am Kopf des Pferdes vorüberkamen, mahnte dieser: Wenn das deine Mutter wüßte, ihr Herz tät ihr zerspringen. Da war die Königstochter sehr betrübt. = So it came to pass that the maid-in-waiting became queen: but the real king's daughter had to look after the geese. Her beloved horse had its head cut off and nailed to the city gate. The Goose Girl got a little boy to help with her work. Whenever the two of them passed by the horse's head, the latter warned: If your mother knew, her heart would break. The king's daughter was very sad.
