[edit]DescriptionGothic Alcove, Hestercombe - geograph.org.uk - 1412832.jpg |
English: Gothic Alcove, Hestercombe Seen from the footpath between Hestercombe Farm and Hill Farm, this rebuilt C18 feature is some way up the slope of the Quantocks from the main part of the gardens. "One of the garden features built by Copleston Warre Bampfylde c1760 which survived to be included on the OS map of 1888. The site was located by excavation in 1998 in advance of reconstruction. This showed that a curved 'bastion' had been added to the existing stone field wall and the ground made up. Into this foundations had been cut for a rectangular building. At the front two substantial pier bases suggest an open, arched, frontage. At the rear an area of worn surface suggests the location of a rear entrance. Large quantities of tile from the roof were recovered but the walls had been completely robbed to the foundations." http://webapp1.somerset.gov.uk/her/details.asp?prn=44403 It has been "reconstructed using, as a model, other known designs in the gothic taste by Coplestone Warre Bampfylde." http://www.tauntondeane.gov.uk/Forms/4-Kingston.pdf |
