Градирня для испарения воды соляных источников представляет собой длинный сарай — иногда в несколько километров, поставленный перпендикулярно направлению господствующего в местности ветра. Сарай открыт с боков и наполнен хворостом. Наверху находится жёлоб, в который насосом накачивают солёную воду. Переливаясь через край, вода распространяется по хворосту, получая огромную поверхность испарения, вследствие чего в тёплое время года и при ветре быстро сгущается. Стёкший раствор накачивается вновь во второй и в третий раз на градирню, пока содержание соли не достигнет 12—15 %. Естественные и градированные крепкие растворы поваренной соли испаряют в больших плоских металлических сосудах, нагреваемых непосредственно огнём или снизу, или с поверхности.
