Summary[edit]
DescriptionGrand Canyon National Park, Bright Angel Trailhead Sign 2887 - Flickr - Grand Canyon NPS.jpg |
March 1, 2013. Left to right: stone mason Brad Quinn, rock cutter Andy Dufford and stone mason Shane Becker, stand behind the new Bright Angel Trailhead Sign, just after the letters were sandblasted and stained. The sign consists of a 9’x5’x12” sandstone slab weighing approximately 3 tons with two ‘bookend’ boulders on either side. Each of the bookend boulders was sawn and chiseled to create a slot to help support the slab vertically. The boulder on the east side also serves as a bench. The sign is also supported by a concrete foundation. “Bright Angel Trailhead” is sandblasted into the slab. It’s sited to capture a background view of the canyon, and has space behind for hikers to pose for a photo op. The ID sign was created by Chevo Studios. NPS photo by Michael Quinn. The trailhead rehabilitation project began on September 4, 2012. The area will be under construction through April 2013 and will be officially dedicated on May 18, 2013. Work includes: a 90 car paved parking lot around the Bright Angel Lodge cabins; new restrooms and a meeting plaza with shade structures; and burial of utilities; an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible Rim Trail connection between the Hermits Rest Route Transfer shuttle bus stop and the Kolb Studio; reconstruction of stone masonry retaining walls near the Kolb Studio and near the southwest trailhead of the Bright Angel Trail. |
