Description

FRED HARVEY BLACKSMITH SHOP NEAR MULE BARN. 08 FEB 1915. AZ INTERSTATE COMMERCE COMMISSION.

The Blacksmith/Saddle Shop was built in 1906 along with the Mule Barn and Livery Stable to serve the El Tovar Hotel. Collectively known as El Tovar Stables, these three buildings were designed by staff of the Fred Harvey Company in the Craftsman style.

The Blacksmith/Saddle Shop was constructed to house farrier and saddle making operations for the mule operations that continue to take visitors to the Canyon floor. The Blacksmith/Saddle Shop is a contributor to the World Heritage, National Register and National Historic Landmark Districts.
