Summary[edit]

Description

This is the entrance to Grand Harbour on the Mediterranean Island of Malta.

Malta has a long history of being attacked by other nations who wanted to possess this place located at an important part of the Med. To protect the island several forts were constructed, particularly in and around the Grand Harbour / Valletta area.

My photo was taken from Fort St Elmo which is not only intact it has recently been refurbished. It's now a fascinating museum of Maltese History. it was in this fort that most of the Oscar-winning film "Midnight Express" was filmed.

The breakwater was replaced a few years ago and the authorities insisted that the bridge leading to it must also be replaced BUT the central pillar of the old bridge must remain - and it does (but is not structurally attached to the new one above it). If you zoom in you can just see this!
