DescriptionGreat Mosque of Kairouan minaret - Minaret de la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan.jpg |
English: The Great Mosque in Kairouan, founded originally in the late 7th century, is the most important mosque in Tunisia and is regarded as the fourth holiest Islamic site, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. This photograph shows part of the main courtyard of the mosque, with the minaret on the left; its lower storey is thought to date from 730, making it the oldest extant minaret in the world.
