Summary
[edit]DescriptionGreat Witley Church - interior 2 - geograph.org.uk - 1137421.jpg |
English: Great Witley Church - interior 2 Detail of the painting of the barrel-vaulted ceiling. The church was originally built in 1735. Designed by James Gibbs, it had a very plain interior with box pews. The church was transformed in 1747 when Lord Foley purchased the interior of the chapel at Canons, Lord Chandos' Edgware palace, including ten stained glass windows, the Bellucci paintings and the ornate organ case. He then employed mould-makers to reproduce the Canons plasterwork in gilded papier mache and create this ceiling.
The ceiling is in good condition due to the painstaking restoration of the church, which started in 1961. http://www.bbc.co.uk/herefordandworcester/content/articles/2006/12/28/great_witley_church_feature.shtml |
