Summary[edit]

Description

Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin (northwestern Wyoming, USA).

Grotto Geyser has an moderately large, oddly-shaped geyserite cone. The unusual morphology has been interpreted as the result of hot spring and geyser activity that emerged in a former stand of conifer trees. The prominent pillar at the center of Grotto Geyser appears to be a geyserite-permineralized and coated tree trunk. “Grotto” means “cave”, and the name refers to several cavern-like recesses and openings present in the eastern and southeastern walls of Grotto Geyser’s cone. Eruptions are frequent and usually take the form of large bursting splashes.
