Summary[edit]

Description
English: ;77-78 North Road

Currently occupied by the Guitar Amp & Keyboard Centre whose distinct yellow and red frontage is also found at TQ3104 : 76 North Road, TQ3104 : 79-80 North Road, the original shop and TQ3104 : 81 North Road. The houses in the row between Upper Gardener Street and Kensington Gardens may well date back to the 1820s or 30s as the latter was the first to be developed north of the road in 1820. Thomas Thorncroft, the first occupier, was also a miller by profession and may have owned one of the mills which lay to the west and north of the current Brighton station. After his successor, Jupp & Sons left the premises in 1896 77 and 78 was briefly split between a stationer and a fishmongers, with the latter under two (Possibly three) generations of the Gower family would trade from the premises for just over 90 years, and reunite the two units in 1910. After the Gower's came an antique dealer, the jewellers De Rigeur, who moved to Union Street in The Lanes, then Kensington Yard which specialised in second hand furniture before the current occupiers extended into it in 2006. the plaque on the wall on the right hand side commemorates the 19th century boxer Tom Sayers, see TQ3104 : Tom Sayers Plaque.
