Photographie intitulée : "Village du papier - Décortication n°203". Le papier s'est révélé être le support à l'écriture le mieux adapté et le plus utilisé dans cettepartie du monde. Fin XIXe - début XXe siècle, les papetiers se concentrent dans la province de Hưng Hóa, au village de Phú Định, et aux portes de Hanoi, au village de Bưởi Bưởi Làng Bưởi, qu’on appelait encore le Village du Papier. La fabrication du papier se déroule alors en cinq opérations : la macération ; le séchage, lavage et broyage dans des mortiers de pierre pour obtenir la pâte à papier ; la dilution de la pâte ; la formation des feuilles sur des cadres de bois ; la mise sous presse de ces mêmes feuilles pour en évacuer l'eau et les séparer, pour enfin les faire sécher. Vers 1892, F.-H. Schneider fonde une fabrique de papier à la mécanique, qu'il installe à Hanoï, près du Grand lac, rue du Village du Papier. Une vue très proche de cette photographie, probablement prise à quelques moments d'intervalle, est également connue sous le titre "Tonkin - Hanoï. Décortiqueuses au Village du Papier", sous la forme de carte postale éditée par Pierre Dieulefils, photographe à qui cette photographie est d'ailleurs attribuée. Photographie faisant partie de l'album "Siam Indochine 1896-1897" comprenant des portraits, des scènes de vie, de l'architecture, des paysages et réunissant différents auteurs et studios.
