| Description |
"The H-34 design was developed by Sikorsky in 1954 to meet certain needs of naval anti-submarine doctrine of the time. The Army was interested in the H-34 as a transport vehicle due to its ability to carry up to 16 passengers, or as much as eight stretchers at a time. The external lift capacity was 500 pounds. In 1955 the Army fielded 10 H-34A helicopters for evaluation and familiarization. The "Choctaw" became the first transport helicopter put into large scale production for the Army. By 1958 it was the principal transport helicopter in the Army inventory, and was also being deployed with units overseas. The H-34 saw extensive service during the Vietnam Conflict as a transport and evacuation vehicle." from placard at the Army Aviation Museum |
