Summary[edit]

Description

An unidentified High Speed Train (HST) is seen passing Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, whilst working First Great Western's 1B40 1330 London Paddington to Carmarthen service. The train was being diverted via the Vale of Glamorgan route between Cardiff and Birdgend due to engineering work on the South Wales Mainline. For many years these occasional diverted trains were the only passenger services which used the section of line between Barry and Bridgend, but regular services were re-introduced in 2005, and the Vale of Glamorgan line is now part of the Valley Lines Network.

A short branch to Barry Island diverges from the Vale of Glamorgan line at Barry. On the right of the photo can be seen Barry's newly commissioned third platform and associated line, which carries Barry Island bound trains. The existing Barry bound line (immediately below) has been taken out of use, though a short stub remains, which I understand is to help protect the junction as trains leave the Barry Island branch.
