Het nieuwe stukje groen aan het Stationsplein is een cadeau van de Bomenstichting aan de NS. De stichting bestaat twintig jaar en wil dit jubileum kracht bijzetten door extra de aandacht te vestigen op een schoon milieu en een gezond bomenbestand. De NS krijgt de boom als symbool voor de bijdrage die het openbaar vervoer levert aan de toekomst van het groen. Bij de stations van alle twaalf provinciehoofdsteden in het land komt een cadeauboom te staan. De steden mogen zelf een boom uitkiezen die in de al bestaande aanplant past. De vijftienjarige plataan die Haarlem heeft gekregen, werd door wethouder Sikma van recreatie geplant.
