Summary[edit]

Description

Greater Manchester Metrolink 1011, an Ansaldo T68 (Phase 1) tram crosses Hagside level crossing at Warth in Radcliffe with an inbound service from Bury Interchange. Monday 11th February 2008

The former Hagside Level Crossing signal box is located by the Outbound line adjacent to level crossing at the junction of Hinds Lane and Warth Fold Road on the border between Bury and Radcliffe, and is a British Railways London Midland Region non standard design built in 1978 by Norwest Holst which opened on 16th March 1980 fitted with a British Railways London Midland Region one control switch panel in conjunction with the closure of Bury Bolton Street station and the opening of Bury Interchange station. It replaced the mechanical signal boxes at Hagside Level Crossing, Buckley Wells and Bury South and was closed on 17th August 1991 when the Bury to Crumpsall section of the Bury to Manchester line was handed over to Greater Manchester Metrolink for conversion into a tram system. The plan was to retain the building as a relay room but the closed circuit televison to monitor the level crossing was not ready when Greater Manchester Metro reopened the line. As a result the box opened in 1992 as a non block post with a crossing keeper operating the level crossing. When the closed circuit televison to monitor the level crossing was commissioned (possibly in 1993) it was used just for its planned role as a relay room
