Halesia carolina, Styracaceae Afrikaans: Blomme van 'n Kleinsneeuklokkiesboom in die Manie van der Schijff Botaniese Tuin, Pretoria. Die wit, vergroeide kroonblare is sigbaar, met die groen, vergroeide kelkblare reg boaan. Die kelk vorm 'n kelkbuis (hipantium) met bitterklein apikale tandjies. Die vrugbeginsel (ovarium) is onderstandig in die Styracaceae, en die hipantium is ook vergroeid aan die vrugbeginselwand. Die (bruin en liggroen) skubbe bo teen die tak is skubblare, want die blomme word gedra op takkies afkomstig van 'n vorige groeiseisoen. Die skubblare, wat aan die einde van die groeiseisoen gevorm word, beskerm die groeipunte teen winterkoue en ongunstige toestande.
English: Flowers of a Little silverbell in the Manie van der Schijff Botanical Garden, Pretoria. The white, coadunate petals are visible, with the deep green, coadunate sepals right above them. The floral tube forms a hypanthium with minute apical teeth. The ovary has an inferior placement in the Styracaceae, and the hypanthium is also coadunate with the ovary wall. The (brown and pale green) scales against the twig are bud scales, as the flowers are borne on twigs produced during an earlier growth season. The bud scales, that are formed at the end of the growth season, protect the growth tips against winter cold and adverse conditions. |
