Description
The experts at Bruun Rasmussen did not mention this, but a note on the verso identified this work as a study for a painting given to the butcher and politician Peter Reimers (1826-1922) in 1902. Reimers married Maria Hermann (1829-1926) in 1852 and the painting was a gift at their golden anniversary in 1902. Peter Reimers had served in the First Schleswig War, and for his conduct in the battle of Isted in 1850, he was rewarded with the order of Dannebrog. The finished painting was given the title Kjæk og tro (spirited and faithful). The description by Kulturstyrelsen (The Danish Culture Department) refers to the battle of Sundeved in 1848 but gives no source for this information. europeana.eu.
