Description |
English: Painting showing Martin Luther as reformator. The uncovering of the candle light (at the left) is not only an allusion to the parable of the lamp under a basket (Mt 5:14–15; Mk 4:21–22; Lk 8:16 and 11:33), but also a simile for Luther’s reformation as relevation of the true Gospel. Behind Luther there is a little goose as a symbol for Luther. Jan Hus (Czech husa means “goose”), who was considered as Luther’s precursor, said there would come a swan after the death of the goose (Hus); this dictum was later applied to Luther. This painting is part of the balustrade/parapet of the northern gallery in the Amanduskirche in Beihingen, a district of Freiberg am Neckar (Germany).
