Summary[edit]

Description
English: Hardwick Hall View of the east side of the building from a very lush meadow which was laden with dew on this September morning. Perhaps this is the most striking of the Elizabethan 'prodigy' houses and referred to in the famous rhyme as 'Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall'. Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury, chose Robert Smythson as its designer, perhaps the first Englishman to be described as an 'architect'. He made his reputation as the master mason at Longleat and other Wiltshire houses of note. Later he was contracted by Sir Francis Willoughby, Sheriff of Nottingham to design and supervise the construction of his home at Wollaton. Smythson stayed on in the area and built Hardwick Hall between 1591 and 1597. Elizabeth lived there until her death in 1608. Each of the six towers is capped by large ‘ES’ to emphasise the importance of its owner. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardwick_Hall
