Ventral view of the hatchetfish Argyropelecus olfersii showing blue bioluminescence from photophores

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Ventral view of a hatchetfish, Argyropelecus olfersii, emitting bioluminescent blue light from the photophores that line its belly and mandible. In life, this light is used to camouflage the fish, reducing its silhouette against downwelling sunlight and thereby hiding the animal from upwards-looking predators. This photo was taken aboard the Irish ship RV Celtic Explorer inside a freezer using an iPhone - in person, the light was somewhat dimmer and paler than it appears here, but was still clearly visible with the naked, dark adjusted eye.
