Description

Funeral hatchment in St Mary's Church, Woodbridge, Suffolk, of Admiral William Carthew (1758-1827), of Woodbridge Abbey, who married Pleasance Myers, the second of the three daughters and co-heiresses of Graham Myers (1748-1801), eldest son and heir of Christopher Myers of Monkstown, Dublin and formerly of Whitehaven in Cumberland, by his wife Jean Graham, a 2nd cousin of "the Duke of Montrose" (William Graham, 2nd Duke of Montrose (1712–1790)?). Graham Myers (1748-1801) was the eldest brother of General William Myers, 1st Baronet, Commander of the British Forces in the West Indies. (John Burke, Bernard Burke, Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Extinct and Dormant Baronetcies, 2nd Ed., London, 1844, p.351[1]. He was the son of Rev Thomas Carthew (1732-1791), a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA), who acquired Woodbridge Abbey in 1771, (Listed building text[2]) by his first wife Elizabeth Morden (1738-1768), a daughter and heiress of Rev Thomas Morden (1712-1782), Rector of Cantley, Norfolk, the brother of Sir William Harbord, 1st Baronet (c. 1697–1770) (born William Morden).

  • 1&4: Grand quarterly:
    • 1&4: Or, a chevron sable between three murres proper (Carthew) (The common murre or common guillemot (Uria aalge) is a large auk)
    • 2&3: Sable, a chevron between three escallops or a bordure engrailed of the last (Mitchell) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.691, a variant of "Mitchell of Stapleton Mitchell, Dorset" and "Mitchell of Llanfretcha Grange, Monmouth"), for his paternal grandmother Elizabeth Mitchell (1701-1776), daughter (and heiress) of ..... Mitchell of Sottery;
  • 2&3: Argent, a fleur-de-lis gules (Morden). For his mother Elizabeth Morden (1738-1768);

Overall an inescutcheon of pretence of Myers: Argent, on the sea proper an ancient ship at anchor with three masts on each a single yard across the sails furled sable colours flying gules, with the augmentation of honour granted in 1804 to his brother General William Myers, 1st Baronet, "and to the descendants of his late brother Graham Myers (1748-1801): On a canton gules a baton or and a sword proper pommel and hilt or in saltire encircled by a mural crown argent
