The name of the portrait sitter - Spaniard Manolo Nuňez Falcò - is handed down to us by the Roman family that was in possession of the painting before the present owners.

The austere setting and the aforementioned probable identification of the effigy, allowed the work we present to be juxtaposed with the famous portrait of Princess Mariquita d'Adda Falcò - also Spanish - painted by Hayez in 1855 (cf. Mazzocca, op. cit., p. 325). The artist paid homage to the origins of the two Falcòs through the recovery of the Spanish portraiture tradition - evident in the hieraticity of the faces - and the use of typical hairstyles: with mantilla for the noblewoman and in the style of Velazqui for the gentleman. The common result of the two works is a solemn compositional layout in which deep psychological analysis and attention to mundane detail, essential in the depiction of two high society figures, coexist.
