Summary[edit]
DescriptionHeath (3162849769).jpg |
Gaultheria or Pernettya 20081208.24 Volcan Quetrupillan, Chile mostly alpine I was not paying close enough attention to the right details while taking notes on these heath-like species. The two genera are separated by fruit type, Pernettya bearing berries, Gautheria bearing berry-like capsules surrounded by a thick, fleshy covering. Species are separated by length of pedicel and leaves, as well as presence of appendages on the anthers. This dwarf species makes it into the alpine as a matted ground cover that crunches delightfully (if a bit guiltfully) underfoot. |
