| Description |
English: The Hedwigepolder: in a bilateral treaty between the Netherlands and Belgium an agreement was made to deepen the river Schelde, to facilitate ships' access to the port of Antwerp. In order to compensate for the loss of nature, it was decided to flood the (Dutch) Hedwigepolder and create a new nature reserve there. In 2009 the Dutch government reversed the decision and searched for other ways to compensate the deepening of the Schelde. The Belgian government wants to adhere to the original decision, as it believes it is a better solution than the alternatives. In 2012, the Dutch government also chose for this option.
Nederlands: De Hedwigepolder: omdat in een verdrag tussen Nederland en België is afgesproken om de Schelde te verdiepen ten behoeve van de haven van Antwerpen, is er volgens Europese afspraken natuurcompensatie nodig. Eén van de manieren om dat te doen is het weghalen van de dijken rond de Hedwigepolder en een deel van de Prosperpolder, en die stukken land weer onderdeel te laten worden van het intergetijdengebied. In 2012 heeft de Nederlandse overheid voor deze optie gekozen. |
