English: Hergest Puzzle. The Offa's Dyke National Trail passes this plantation of monkey puzzle trees in the middle of the old Kington Racecourse on Hergest Ridge. Quite what they are doing here is anybody's guess, but they must be a particular hardy wind resistant species.
Went to a talk last week by the current landowner (Laurence Banks) during which he said that these were planted by his father. Apparently there's another clump visible on somebody else's land and he planted these as a sort of riposte! They're supposed to be tough and indigestible, but apparently two of them were nibbled by sheep at the sapling stage. The fence shown in your photograph has now been removed (presumably the trees are now big enough to be safe even from the local sheep). |
