Summary[edit]

Description

Some details of the "Palácio do Café" (Portuguese for Coffee Palace), including one of several sculptures of Hermes, the Greek god of commerce, which makes sense as the building was constructed in 1933 to be the first Commodities Exchange in Brazil, and coffee was our best-selling product at the time.

I think this is the most interesting building in town in terms of history, and its architecture is very impressive too.

The company that constructed the building was founded in 1890 and has evolved through time and still exists as both commodities and stock exchange, now named B3, (formerly BM&FBOVESPA) the Country's biggest with a market cap of US$ 1.0 trillion.

The company moved to a new and bigger place in 1977 and since then the building houses the State court of São Paulo.

From bull market to state court, if These Walls Have Eyes like the Bee Gees song says, I just wonder what they saw...

Just another curiosity: the building is located right across the street from 'Pátio do Colégio', the site where the city was founded in 1554.
