Summary
[edit]DescriptionHethersett station - the platform goods store - geograph.org.uk - 1607157.jpg |
English: Hethersett station - the platform goods store. The derelict station at Hethersett is situated almost two kilometres distant from the heart of the town it once served, and cut off from it by the A11 road. The brick and flint single-storey station > 1607207 - built in 1845 - survives more or less as at closure, with the canopy and the platform goods store > 1607194 still in place. The station platforms have been removed. For some time the station buildings were used as part of a tyre store but they have since been abandoned and are now derelict. Hethersett station was on the Great Eastern Railway main line between Norwich-Thetford/Ely, and in the 1960s it was still served by 10 to 12 trains daily each way, the majority being Norwich-King's Lynn/Wells-next-the-Sea services. Deemed as surplus to requirements the station was closed in 1966 but trains are still travelling past here. The level crossing on Station Lane > 1607174 - immediately west of the railway station - is blocked and bypassed by a bridge > 1607178 a short distance further to the south-west. Private sidings > 1607101 into a Ministry of Defence oil depot were opened during WWII. They have since been disconnected but are still in place on what is presently used as a petrol depot > 1607072. |
