Description

Rafael Mariano Grossi, IAEA Director General, with Former US Energy Secretary Dr. Ernest Moniz, at a High-Level Dialogue (virtual event) about Microreactors. The dialogue will take place alongside the IAEA’s first Technical Meeting on the Status, Design Features, Technology Challenges and Deployment Models of Microreactors. IAEA, Vienna, Austria. 29 April 2021. The DG is joined by his two senior staff, Sayed Ashraf, Senior Scientific Adviser to the DG and Edgard Perez Alvan, Senior Advisor to the Director General.

DG Grossi and Secretary Moniz will talk about: -- opportunities and challenges in microreactor technology development and deployment

-- the competitiveness of microreactors and how they can integrate with other clean energy sources

-- the level of international collaboration needed to catalyse development and deployment

-- the nuclear security and non-proliferation considerations specific to microreactors

A Secretary of Energy from 2013 to 2017, Mr. Moniz served alongside the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in negotiating the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran and the major world powers. He is currently Co-Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and the Founding CEO of the Energy Futures Initiative, as well as a Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
