Construit en 1743 par M. de Léry sous des ordres de d'administrateur la Galissonnière. Ce poste était depuis longtemps le rendez-vous de toutes les expéditions militaires du côté du Lac Champlain. Le 31 Août 1759, le Commandant de Roquemaure le fit sauter d’après les ordres du Gouverneur de Vaudreuil pour éviter qu’il tombât aux mains des Anglais. Reconstruit par le Gouverneur Carleton en 1775, Il soutint, la même année, sous le commandement du Major Charles Preston, du 26ième Régiment, un siège de 45 jours contre les troupes Américaines Commandées par le Général Montgomery. Commission des Monuments Historiques du Canada Fort Saint Jean Constructed in 1743 by M. de Léry under orders from Governor la Galissonnière. This post was for all the military expeditions towards Lake Champlain. In August, 1760, Commandant de Roquemaure had it blown up in accordance with orders from the Governor de Vaudreuil in order to prevent its falling into the hands of the English. Rebuilt by Governor Carleton, in 1773. During the same year, under the command of Major Charles Preston of the 26th Regiment, it withstood a 45 day siege by the American troops commanded by General Montgomery. |
