Construit par l'architecte Pierre Pavillon et le sculpteur Jean-Claude Rambot, sur un plan en U derrière une porte cochère, sa disposition est rare à Aix où les hôtels particuliers s'offrent aux regards sur rue.

La façade est classique, avec un étagement de pilastres doriques, ioniques puis corinthiens. La frise qui la parcourt s'orne de triglyphes (succession de trois barrettes verticales), et métopes qui portent des rosaces.

L'hôtel possédait un théâtre privé renommé, en partie décoré par Jean Daret, qui montre l'intérêt séculaire des Aixois pour cet art.

Olympe Mancini, nièce de Mazarin l'habita lors du séjour de Louis XIV en 1660.

L'écrivain Louise Colet y naquit, célèbre pour sa beauté, ses poésies et ses amours extravagantes. L'aile orientale accueillit la direction de la poste au 19e siècle.

La girafe offerte par le pacha d'Égypte à Charles X en 1827 y fut logée lors de son trajet de Marseille à Paris.
