English: Hotel boat and butty, Stratford-upon-Avon Canal near Solihull There are many pairs of boats operated as Hotels. The powered boat pulls an unpowered "butty".
By the towpath is the butty ( "Karna Taka"), a narrowboat with no method of propulsion and a large wooden tiller and rudder for steering. This one has guest accommodation (four bunks + lounge) and crew accommodation. Moored alongside is the motorised narrowboat (including galley, crew quarters, and maybe four bunks for guests). This boat will tow the butty. It is probably narrowboat "Rose". Both these boats are as long as they can be (71 feet) to fit in the narrow locks on most canals, or as a pair in wide locks. This pair of boats was climbing the Lapworth flight of locks in front of us, and we expected slow progress, but no! Their crew and guests were very slick despite the wet conditions! |
