Summary[edit]

Description
English: Huge Open Pit or "Gunnis" on Eastcott Down This huge pit is part of a series of 3 or 4 all on the line of a vein of manganese ore which was extracted by open cast mining. This type of pit is called a gunnis. The manganese mine dates from the 18th century. High quality slate, used amongst other purposes for making snooker tables, was also extracted from the same location, referred to locally as "The Slate Quarry". There are also unmarked open shafts in the area so it is potentially very dangerous to explore.
