Summary[edit]

Description Est Series XIII 4-8-2 No.241.001 (SNCF 241A.1), built by the Est at their Epernay works (Works No.904) in 1925, the prototype of 41 engines in this series. The first "Mountain" 4-8-2 in Europe. A de Glehn-du Bousquet type compound. Rebuilt by Chapelon in 1933. 49 identical engines were also built for the Etat in 1931-33. 03/09. What a superb looking loco. But what a difficult photo to take. This hall is in drakness with bright spotlights - apparently "evoking train travel at night", I was told by a member of staff (in French, of course). I had no tripod so just had to prop myself against the wall and hold the camera as still as I could. I took several shots until I got one that I was reasonably satisfied with.
