Summary[edit]
DescriptionHughes Hall, American University.jpg |
English: "Ultra-modern in structure with spacious rooms, elevators and lounges from the main
lounge on the first floor to television lounges on each floor, we all feel more than at home." (From the 1960 Talon yearbook.) Hughes Hall comprised part of the Hughes-McDowell Women's Residence Center. Opening in the fall of 1959, the building was not dedicated until September 10, 1962, when McDowell Hall was completed. The building was constructed where the original Hughes, a two-story structure built in 1946 to house veterans, stood on McDowell Lane Court. The dormitory was named for Edwin Holt Hughes (1866-1950) who was a Methodist Bishop, member of the Board of Trustees from 1932 to 1950, and acting Chancellor from 1932 to 1933. |
