Summary[edit]

On 23 October 1956, Hungarian demonstrators began to cut the communist coat of arms from the center of the then-official Hungarian flag, leaving a distinctive hole.

33 years later, many Germans did the same thing to the flag of the DDR (East Germany) as they protested against their government.
