Summary

[edit]
Description The Hunt House in St. Charles (1841). Bela Thaxter Hunt settled by the Fox River in 1836. He purchased 200 acres in what would become a large part of St. Charles. He oversaw the construction of the town's first building in 1836, and bought a small hotel in 1837. He built his house, now the oldest in the town, in 1841. He entered the paper industry in 1844, building a paper mill northwest of the Ohio River. His plant would employ over 80 people. In 1850 he switched trades again, opening a tannery. The tannery burned in a 1861 fire, after which Hunt started a hardware store, which ran until his retirement in 1890. He served as a major in the Civil War. His son Frank B. Hunt would become the third mayor of St. Charles. The house remained in the Hunt family until 1980. Until recently, it was a museum, but is now for sale as a private residence.
