| Description |
English: Huxter Mills, Shetland - a horizontal wheel. These ancient mills had the wheel mounted horizontally, with the shaft directly connected to millstones on the floor above. The mill could be 'switched' on by lowering the wheel into the stream. The iron bar in the foreground is the lever for this. Built in Norse times, and still in use in the 20th century |
