Italiano: Matera, nota con gli appellativi di "Città dei Sassi" e "Città Sotterranea", è conosciuta in tutto il mondo per gli storici rioni Sassi, che fanno di Matera una delle città ancora abitate più antiche al mondo.
I Sassi di Matera sono stati riconosciuti il 9 dicembre 1993, nell'assemblea di Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), patrimonio dell'umanità dall'UNESCO, primo sito dell'Italia meridionale a ricevere tale riconoscimento. Hanno avuto origine da piccoli nuclei abitativi insediatisi attorno a luoghi di culto e si sono sviluppati oltre le mura che cingevano la Civita, l’antico centro istituzionale, religioso e commerciale della città. Sono divisi in due aree più grandi: il Caveoso, composto soprattutto da grotte, e il Barisano, per lo più costituito da abitazioni realizzate secondo tecniche costruttive più complesse. In particolare, i Sassi sono contraddistinti da un sistema idrico finalizzato alla raccolta di acqua piovana e sorgiva, in passato costituito da una rete di canaletti e cisterne talmente capillare da riuscire a portare l’acqua sia nelle abitazioni che nei vicinati. |
