Description

A construção primitiva da Igreja Matriz remonta à Idade Média. Foi nela que Vasco da Gama, inicialmente destinado pelos pais à carreira eclesiástica, recebeu das mãos do bispo de Safim, em 1480, a prima tonsura. No início do século XVIII, a igreja é já pequena para a quantidade de crentes que querem assistir à missa. Com autorização da Ordem de Santiago, é profundamente remodelada na década de 30 desse século (sob a orientação provável de João Antunes, arquitecto da Mesa da Consciência e Ordens, ou de seu colaborador), ganhando o aspecto actual, típico do barroco joanino. <a href="http://www.sines.pt/PT/Concelho/patrimonioarquitectonico/igrejamatriz/Paginas/default.aspx">www.sines.pt/PT/Concelho/patrimonioarquitectonico/igrejam...</a>
