Text Appearing Before Image: ad in this respect.^ The city did not attract or interest me enough, however, tomake me wish to stay longer than was necessary, and I wascontent to remember it by two photographs which I purchasedafterwards. The mahmdn-khanah, or hostlery, at which I put upshowed signs that we were approaching a more civilized region.The building had a veranda, a large sleeping-room furnishedwith a table and a bed, and there was a kitchen, where I founda saucepan and tried the experiment of making an omelet,which proved quite a success. My most vivid impression ofthe mahmdn-khanah, however, is associated with my first tasteof arac. I needed spirits for medicinal purposes, and the ser-vants could procure only arac in the bazaar. I should not liketo repeat the dose of this particular brand, for the taste re-sembled what I could imagine a combination of gin, whisky,and furniture-varnish might be !
