Description

"Improvisation No. 30 (Cannons)", by Wassily Kandinsky at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. Oil on canvas, 1913.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was a Russian painter who created the first truly abstract expressionist artistic style by focusing on how color and form, rather than narration, elicited emotion. From 1896 to 1914, Kandinsky lived in Munich, where he was part of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter ("Blue Rider").

He returned to Russia in 1914. He left in 1921 after the Communists took power, and returned to Germany. He taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture until the Nazis closed it in 1933. He moved to France, where he produced some of his most prominent art.

Kandinsky painted based on pure intuition and impulse. This work, perhaps inspired by war hysteria, is one of his later abstract works and marks the last of his paintings before he entered his major productive phase.
