Description |
In the doorway , by Erik Pevernagie, (100 x 80 cm ), Oil on canvas
The doorway is a liminal spot. It stands for an intermediate state and a location of transition. It is a place that may symbolize entrance or exit. Standing in the doorway can imply expectation. It can signify the prospect of a happy coincidence, a fortunate occurrence, a chance to be lucky. A door can represent a choice, innovative opportunities, an opening to new cultures and new-fangled values. It can be a symbol of acceptance and recognition. It can be a sign of exclusion or it can be way to escape and regain freedom. A door can have human characteristics. It can creak when it is tired or squeak when it is getting old. It can show its anger when it is slammed. It demonstrates its stubbornness when it does not open. A door can be a choice, a possibility, a protection or an aperture to new-fangled values. It can mean a barrier, a prison or a gate to freedom. It can, however, vanish in the mist of unawareness by lack of social concern. At that moment, our freedom has become our jail and we feel locked up in our own liberty. Any exit has waned: the doorway has been absorbed in the stupor of our infatuation. When the door starts to creak it may be time to take it off the hinges. If things get rusted, life has to be called into question and matters re-evaluated.
