Description

On 27 May 1968 Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi arrived in New Zealand for a 2 day visit. During the tour Mrs Gandhi met members of the New Zealand Indian community and visited the Dominion Museum to see Māori artefacts. The logistics for the visit were arranged by the Department of Internal Affairs and there is numerous correspondence held by Archives New Zealand in relation to the visit. On display here is the front cover for the full itinerary of Mrs Gandhi’s visit.

Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and also 1980 to 1984. Her 2nd term ended when she was assassinated in October 1984 by Sikh bodyguards. Gandhi was cremated on 3 November near Raj Ghat. The site where she was cremated is today known as Shakti Sthala. Her funeral was televised live on domestic and international stations, including the BBC. Following her cremation, millions of Sikhs were displaced and nearly three thousand were killed in anti-Sikh riots.

Indira Gandhi was the daughter of former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. She married an Indian journalist, Feroze Gandhi, to acquire the Gandhi surname. They had met whilst studying law in the United Kingdom. She is no relation to former Indian Independence leader, Mahatma Gandhi.
