| Description |
English: Louisville & Indiana Railroad diesel locomotive number 1803 undergoing refurbishment at the Midwest Railway Preservation Society in Cleveland, Ohio.
This locomotive was built in 1954 by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), an American manufacturer of diesel-electric locomotives. It is a GP9, with an EMD 16-567C engine capable of producing 1,750 hp and 1.3 MW of power. It has a B-B wheel arrangement (two trucks, each with two powered axles). GP stands for "General Purpose", and it was an extremely popular general purpose locomotive that was also widely used as a yard switcher. There were more than 4,300 of these made between 1954 and 1963. Some time between 1978 and 1981, this locomotive was upgraded to a GP11 model. The internal electronics were upgraded to Dash 2 solid state electrical equipment. All told, 51 of the GP9s were upgraded to GP11s, all of them for the Illinois Central Railroad. This one ended up in the hands of the Louisville & Indiana Railroad. |
