Summary[edit]

Description
English: Interior of the Church of St Helen, Saxby Bejewelled altar cross.

The church of St Helen was built in 1775 as a Parish Church and a Mortuary Chapel for the Lumley Saunderson family (the Earls of Scarborough) and there are memorials to them inside.

The interior has a central isle leading to a semi-circular altar apse. The apse was built with a window behind the altar, facing east, but in 1869 this was filled in and plastered over. The memorials in the church are to the 6th, 7th and 8th Earls of Scarborough and the 7th Countess.

In 2004, following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the church was redecorated to as it was when built in 1775. Detailed paint samples were taken by Nigel Leaney, who was able to produce the original colour scheme of the church.

Unfortunately the interior of the church was badly affected by a small earthquake at 01.05, which hit Lincolnshire on the morning of 27th Feb 2008. The church was fully restored in Apr 2009.
