Drowned Trying To Rescue Another. Isaac Kershaw, Seized With Cramps and Sank In the Canal. A sad drowning occurred in the canal at South Bound Brook on Saturday afternoon when Isaac Kershaw, a young colored man of South Bound Brook lost his life in attempting to rescue Todd Russell, whose canoe had overturned. Mr. Russell was sailing a canoe on the canal a little ways below the bridge at South Bound Brook when a strong gust of wind capsized the boat, throwing him into the water. Being unable to swim, he was nearly drowned. Isaac Kershaw saw him struggling in the water and jumping overboard, tried to help him. It is supposed that on account of the very cold water he was seized with cramps and drowned. John P. Koechlein, of Cedar street, South Bound Brook, was fishing nearby and saw the accident. He soon reached the spot, jumped in the water and tried to save them both, but only succeeded in rescuing Mr. Russell after a hard struggle of over half an hour. Mr. Russell was taken to the Berkeley Hotel where he and his wife board, and Dr. J. T. Robinson worked over him for quite a while. He will be around in a few days. Mr. Koechlein was taken to his home by Doctor Robinson in his automobile and is now in good shape after his cold plunge. Kershaw's body was recovered after about two hours search by William H. Myers. Upon the county physician's order it was removed to Edgerton's morgue at Bound Brook. The funeral was held this afternoon.
