Notes "Very rare and spectacular bird's-eye view of Paris burned down, drawn and lithographed in color by Isidore Deroy. These fires took place during the final episode of the Paris Commune, between Sunday 21 and Sunday 28 May 1871. At the end of this episode, called the Bloody Week, the Commune was crushed, with mass executions of its members. The large fires that will set many Parisian monuments ablaze begin on May 23. As we can see on the print, several fires will devastate the Tuileries Palace, the Louvre, the Palais-Royal, the Ministry of Finance, the Prefecture of Police, the Palais de Justice, the Palais d'Orsay (at the location of the current Musee d'Orsay), as well as the Hotel de Ville, of which all of the Paris archives, as well as all of the Parisian civil status, will be annihilated. The view is taken from the Place de la Concorde looking east, and shows, with impressive night effects, the fires whose lights reflect on the Seine." (Begonia Le Bail, 2021)
