Summary[edit]

In the 1920s Pierneef occasionally painted with tempera or casein which is a mixture of powder paint pigments and egg yolk. Although this medium bears some resemblance to gouache, it has a much richer tonality and a distinctive luminosity. In this work, most probably painted plein-air, the artist has rapidly rendered, with painterly brushstrokes, his impressions of threatening masses of cloud looming over distant purple mountains and emerald green hillsides. Such sketches from nature display a spontaneity and expressiveness that sets them apart from Pierneef's stylised oils that he painted in his studio.
