Summary
[edit]DescriptionJackson's Boat Footbridge, River Mersey - geograph.org.uk - 447357.jpg |
English: Jackson's Boat Footbridge, River Mersey This footbridge dates from 1881, replacing an earlier bridge of 1816. This was a toll bridge until the 1940s. Before the bridge was constructed a ferry operated here. The pub on the south side of the river is still known as Jackson's Boat, but was formerly the Bridge Inn or The Greyhound. The building dates from the 18th century and was reputedly a haunt of Jacobite sympathisers.
The river Mersey forms the historical boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire. However, due to changes in the course of the river the pub occupies a pocket of Lancashire on the Cheshire (i.e. south) side. |
