English: Jefferson Food Market, 1616 Jefferson Avenue at Northland Avenue, Buffalo, New York, January 2021. Here we have a late-period but quite representative example of the Romanesque Revival style realized on a small scale and adapted to commercial purposes: what catches the eye first on this three-story, handsome red-brick edifice are the round-arched windows on the upper floor, topped consecutively with a continuous string course of similarly round-arched window heads, a frieze ornamented with stone blocks, and a cornice of corbelled dentils. The second floor boasts projecting bay windows with a swag motif. Constructed in 1898, the building was originally divided into two separate storefronts, the left-hand side of which (then numbered 1614 Jefferson) was initially a grocery store run by Hollis H. Hynes, who was in business until 1901 and was followed in that location by a rapid turnover of new shopkeepers. By 1908 it was the home of Charles Haas' meat market, which was succeeded in 1915 by George Weiss and his son Godfrey, whose store operated until 1949. Meanwhile, 1616 Jefferson (originally 153 Northland Avenue), on the right, had always been a drugstore, run in succession by Philip Kuhles (1898-1900), Rose Schorp (1902-14), Daniel Cole (1915-16), and John Andrews (1917-40). By January 1981 - the date its Building/Structure Inventory Form was filed with the New York State Division for Historic Preservation - the two stores had been merged into one, and current tenant Jefferson Food Market already occupied the space. |
